Daize Shayne: Surfing in a New
Direction

Pro-surfer Daize Shayne was a two-time world long board
champion. Daize was also a girl who loved to party until she got
a wake up call that completely changed her life. Read how she
describes what happened.

My name is Daize Shayne, and I’m from Waimanalo which is
on the east side of Oahu in Hawaii. Things I love about surfing
are that you get to hang out with your friends, that you get to
be yourself without anyone’s opinion, and that you get to
just get away from the stress of everyday life.
I started surfing when I was a teenager. I got into it really
quick and once I was into it I was hooked, and I’ll probably
be surfing until I die too. It just grabs you.
I wasn’t pursuing a world championship when I started surfing.
I was just doing it for fun. And when I won the world championship
in 1999 it just kind of fell in my lap.
 As
far as starting surfing, it was a complete blessing because I
started at the perfect time. If I would have started a few years
later, or maybe even earlier, it wouldn’t have been able
to catapult like it did because women’s surfing just started
getting popular about five years ago. And when I was surfing there
were no girls out there. I had to go through all kinds of things
from the guys taking my boards and hiding them to putting wax
instead of soap on my boards. Now it is almost dominated by women
in certain spots. It’s pretty cool, so I feel lucky that
I started when I did.
I got into drugs at a really early age, probably about 12 years
old. I started smoking cigarettes, drinking, and smoking pot when
I was pretty young. Surfing actually saved me from getting into
the hard drugs, but I was still doing drugs like acid and pot.
Wipe Out
Basically, it got so bad that I was just doing it and doing it,
and it just consumed me. Then I started doing ecstasy. It was
really fun while I was doing it, even though I didn’t realize
what I was doing. I was digging shovel load after shovel load
and in my heart there was still the hugest hole ever. Then it
just overwhelmed me one day and I freaked out. I thought, “What
am I doing? This is so lame! And I’m living a total lie.”
I was up all night, doing drugs, partying, dancing on bar tables,
and just getting really, really crazy, and having no integrity.
I was living a complete lie and these little girls were looking
to this image that I portrayed and it was completely false and
empty. I remember going home. We were supposed to go out that
night. I just said, “I’m going to take a bath”
and all my friends were downstairs just partying and drinking.
I took a bath and I just started bawling. I was thinking, “What
am I doing? This is really not the life I want to live.”
And I just broke. I can’t really even explain it. It is
almost hard to even remember because it was one of those cries
when you feel like you should just throw up because you are crying
so hard. I was just crying out to God, “Lord, help me, I
can’t do this on my own, and I know that you are the only
way I can get out of this. I know I can’t get out of this
on my own. I know you have a destiny for me and I’m not
living it. I know I’m on the wrong path right now.”
So, I just closed my eyes and said that prayer. I know a lot
of people often have to go to church and go up front to have that
prayer of salvation, but it really only matters what is going
on in your heart. God says He weighs the heart. So I just said,
“Lord, I accept you. I love you. I’m sorry. I know
that you are the only way I can get out of this. I need your help.”
And as soon as the water drained out of that bath tub, it was
like all the guilt, all the shame, all the addictions, everything
was gone.
Peace
Two months later I was done with everything. God has completely
changed me. I’ve done a complete 180. It’s crazy how
your life can completely change when you just let Him in, and
just start a relationship with Him and start talking to Him. When
you start letting Him love you, it’s just crazy.
The future of Daize, as cheesy as it sounds, it just completely
in the hands of God. I’m just surrendered to whatever He
wants me to do.

What about you?
Surrender, that is the key. Maybe you are like Daize and you have
gotten into things that you didn’t really intend to do,
and now you are out of control. Maybe you are wondering, "How
in the world do I get back?" Well, the Bible says, "When
you seek me with all of your heart, then you will find me."
You may be thinking, "Can this really be for me? Can it really
happen?" The answer is yes. From your innermost being you
can change.
Whatever you currently have this compulsive desire for -- whether
it is drugs, alcohol, pornography, or something else -- it can
all be taken away. You too, can have peace. You can have the peace
that passes all understanding. You can know love. You can know
just how much God loves you. You can have security in knowing
that He is looking out for you. You can have all these things
when you seek Him with all your heart.
Here are the words of Jesus, “Behold, I stand at the door
and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I’ll
come in.” (Revelation 3:20) Is that for you? Are you hearing
His voice right now? If you are, all you have to do is bow your
head and pray a very simple prayer. And I promise you Jesus will
answer, and He will come into your heart and life. He can make
you new again. Pray this very simple prayer and Jesus will do
all the rest.
Jesus, I open the door of my heart and I ask
you to come in. I ask you to forgive me, to cleanse me, to make
me new again, and Jesus if you will do this for me I promise
that I will follow you all the days of my life. Hear my prayer
for I pray this in your name. Amen.
The Bible says that if you believe in your heart and then confess
with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you shall be saved. Call up
